1The jobs inside a warehouse

Every product you buy passes through a warehouse or distribution centre first. Shoprite’s Riverfields distribution centre in Kempton Park alone employs more than 1,700 people and supplies more than 500 stores (Shoprite). These are the main entry-level jobs and what they involve, based on current South African job ads:

1
General worker / picker-packerPicking orders, packing them, loading and offloading trucks, and putting stock away in the right locations.
2
Receiving clerkChecking deliveries against purchase orders and invoices, logging stock into the system and handling returns (example ad).
3
Dispatch clerkPreparing orders for delivery with the right paperwork, such as dispatch notes and waybills, and making sure the right goods leave on the right truck.
4
Stock controller / storemanRecording stock in and out, cycle counts and stock takes, and investigating differences between the system and the shelf (example ad).
5

6

Where the money isMoving from general worker to clerk, stock controller or supervisor is how pay grows in logistics. The step up usually needs paperwork and stock-control skills, Excel, and a good track record.

3What employers ask for

  • Matric is “essential” in most clerk and stock controller ads.
  • Experience: 1 to 3 years for storeman roles and 2 to 4 years for stock control. Some junior dispatch ads, like the Epping one, say experience is preferred, not compulsory.
  • Excel and stock systems: Excel, Pastel, SAP, Syspro or Zoho appear in stock controller ads (example).
  • Licences: a forklift certificate or driver’s licence is asked for in some picker and driver roles, but rarely for clerk roles.
  • Accuracy and honesty: stock is money, so employers look for people who count carefully and can be trusted.

4Forklift licence: cost, length and renewal

In South Africa a forklift “licence” is really a certificate of competence plus a carry card, issued after training with an accredited provider under the Driven Machinery Regulations. The carry card is valid for up to 24 months. If it has expired for more than 90 days, you must redo the novice training. Learners must be at least 18 and need a medical fitness declaration and eye test (Government Gazette notice, 2015).

ProviderPrice (counterbalance F1 / reach F2)Length
Wheelset AcademyF1 R1,200, F2 R1,700. Renewal R500 to R7003 to 5 days
Alika TrainingF1 R1,700, F2 R2,5003 to 5 days

Check before you payMake sure the provider is TETA-accredited and gives you a certificate and carry card. Some employers pay for forklift training once you’re hired, so ask.

Learnerships pay a stipend. For example, Triton Express ran a 12-month freight handling learnership paying R4,000 a month for matriculants aged 23 to 35 (Careers24). The W&RSETA says learners never pay to join a learnership (W&RSETA).

Avoid job scamsReal employers never ask for money to apply, for training or for a uniform. Pick n Pay has a page on recruitment scams worth reading.
