Festive season jobs in South Africa: Black Friday 27 November and the R30.23 an hour minimum wage

Festive Season Jobs in South Africa 2026: Who’s Hiring, Pay and How to Apply

Updated November 20267 min readCareer guides

December is the busiest month of the year for shops, so stores, warehouses and delivery companies take on extra people for Black Friday and the Christmas rush. This guide shows who hires, how to apply on the official careers pages, what the work pays by law, and how to spot the fake “December jobs” adverts that do the rounds every year.

Key takeaways

  • Many festive roles are advertised from September and October, so apply now and keep checking.
  • Black Friday is on Friday 27 November 2026, and stores need extra hands before and after it.
  • By law you must be paid at least R30.23 an hour (the national minimum wage from 1 March 2026), temporary work included.
  • Apply only on official careers pages. No real employer charges you to apply.
  • SAYouth.mobi is free, uses no data and lists opportunities near you.

1When shops hire for the festive season

Stats SA calls December “the most important month of the year for retail trade” (Stats SA). To cope, retailers and warehouses add temporary staff for the weeks around Black Friday, which falls on Friday 27 November 2026, and for the Christmas and January sales.

Hiring starts early. Some festive store roles were advertised in September 2026 and closed in mid-October, and TFG says its own hiring process takes about one to two months from application to offer (TFG careers FAQ). If you are reading this in November, don’t wait: apply now, keep your profile up to date, and check the careers pages every few days. Warehouses and delivery companies often keep hiring closer to the peak.

Be realisticThousands of people apply for festive work, and nobody can promise you a post. The people who get called are usually the ones who applied early, filled in every field, and can start straight away.

2Festive jobs you can apply for

These are the kinds of temporary roles you will often see advertised over the festive season. Many entry-level posts don’t ask for experience, but check each advert, because some ask for matric.

4What festive jobs pay

Temporary work is covered by the same law as permanent work. From 1 March 2026 the national minimum wage is R30.23 for every ordinary hour worked (Government Gazette 54075). Some big retailers pay more than this:

WhatPaySource
National minimum wageR30.23 an hourGovernment Gazette, from 1 March 2026
Woolworths minimumR45 an hourBusinessTech, Aug 2026
Average cashier pay at ShopriteR34.83 an hour (2025)BusinessTech, from company reporting
Average cashier pay at Pick n PayR33.44 an hour (2025)BusinessTech, from company reporting
Petrol attendant minimumR48.08 an hourMIBCO, from 2 Sept 2026 (our salary guide)

How much you take home depends on how many hours you are given, and temporary contracts vary, so check the hours and the pay rate in your contract before you sign.

5How to stand out

  • Apply early and finish your profile. Half-finished applications are easy to skip.
  • Say when you can work. Weekends, late shifts, December and the January sales are exactly when stores need people.
  • Keep your phone on and your airtime topped up. Many employers call or SMS, and they move on if they can’t reach you.
  • Keep a one-page CV ready. Our guide on writing a CV with no experience shows you how.
  • Show you already know the basics. Handling cash, working a till, counting stock and dealing with difficult customers all come up in interviews. A short course and a certificate on your CV give you something real to talk about.

6Festive job scams: red flags

Fake “December jobs” posts appear every year, often using big retailers’ names. Watch out for these:

  • Any fee. “No person may charge a fee to any work seeker for providing employment services,” says the Department of Employment and Labour (SAnews). One scam asked job seekers for a “refundable R250 fee” for background checks.
  • Jobs that only appear on random Facebook pages or WhatsApp forwards. If you can’t find the same job on the employer’s official careers site, treat it as fake.
  • Links that don’t go to the official careers site. Start from the employer’s own website, like the links in the table above, instead of a link someone sent you.
  • Requests for your banking PIN, passwords or OTPs. No employer needs these to hire you.
  • “Online police clearance” sellers. A real police clearance needs your fingerprints taken at a police station (GroundUp).

Pick n Pay also has a page on recruitment scams worth reading. If someone asks you for money for a job, report it to the Department of Employment and Labour, and to the police if you have lost money.

7Free youth job platforms

SAYouth.mobi is a free, government-backed platform for young people. It is zero-rated, so it uses no data, and more than 5.7 million young people have registered (SAnews, June 2026). You can register with or without an ID number and then see opportunities near you (YES FAQ).

YES (Youth Employment Service) offers 12-month work experiences with companies. YES doesn’t recruit directly: its opportunities are filled through partner companies and listed on SAYouth (YES). Both are free, and both are separate from Purple Growth.

Is it too late to apply for festive jobs in November?

Many festive roles are advertised in September and October, but some keep opening closer to Black Friday and December, especially in warehouses and through temporary agencies. Apply now and keep checking.

Can I get a festive season job without matric?

Some entry-level posts, like packers and general workers, don’t ask for matric, but many store and clerk posts do. Read each advert before you apply.

How much do festive season workers get paid?

By law you must be paid at least R30.23 an hour, the national minimum wage from 1 March 2026. Some retailers pay more, for example Woolworths’ minimum of R45 an hour reported by BusinessTech in August 2026.

How do I apply for Shoprite or Checkers festive jobs?

Register for store jobs at apply.shoprite.jobs, linked from the Shoprite Holdings careers page. Applying is free: no real employer charges you to apply.
