π― Learning Outcomes
By the end of this topic you will be able to:
- Safely open and support a vehicle bonnet.
- Identify the main components visible under the bonnet.
- Follow the correct procedure before and after bonnet access.
- Apply safety rules to protect yourself and the customer’s vehicle.
Why Safe Bonnet Procedures Matter
Checking under the bonnet is a standard service that customers expect from a petrol attendant. Done correctly it builds trust, prevents accidents, and protects both the attendant and the vehicle. Done incorrectly it can result in:
- Burns from a hot engine or radiator cap.
- Damage to sensitive engine components.
- Injury from a falling bonnet.
- Fire risk near fuel or electrical components.
Before Opening the Bonnet
Pre-Check Steps
- Engine must be off β always ensure the engine has been switched off before opening the bonnet. A running engine has moving fan blades that can cause serious injury.
- Ask permission β always ask the customer: “May I check under the bonnet for you?”
- Allow to cool β if the vehicle has just arrived after a long journey, allow 2β3 minutes before touching hot components.
- Check for leaks β look underneath the vehicle for any dripping fluid before lifting the bonnet.
- Locate the release lever β usually found inside the car near the driver’s footwell or under the dashboard; ask the customer to pull it if you cannot locate it.
Opening the Bonnet β Step by Step
- Ask the customer to pull the interior release lever.
- Stand in front of the vehicle and locate the secondary safety latch (a small lever under the front edge of the bonnet).
- Press or slide the secondary latch to the side while lifting the bonnet simultaneously.
- Raise the bonnet fully and secure it with the bonnet prop rod (metal rod inside the bonnet area) β slot the prop rod tip into the designated hole to hold the bonnet open safely.
- Never prop the bonnet with anything other than the dedicated prop rod.
What You Will Find Under the Bonnet
| Component | Function | What to Check |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil dipstick | Measures oil level in the engine sump | Level between MIN and MAX marks |
| Coolant reservoir | Stores excess coolant for the radiator | Level at MIN/MAX line on reservoir |
| Brake fluid reservoir | Hydraulic fluid for the braking system | Level between MIN and MAX |
| Windscreen washer bottle | Water reservoir for windscreen wipers | Sufficient water level |
| Battery | Powers the vehicle’s electrical systems | Corrosion on terminals (visible white/blue crust) |
β οΈ Safety Warnings β Never Do These
- Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot β scalding coolant can spray and cause severe burns. Wait until the engine is completely cool.
- Never touch moving fan belts or the cooling fan β the fan can start automatically even with the engine off on some vehicles.
- Do not smoke or use open flames near the engine bay β fuel and oil vapours are flammable.
- Never lean over the engine with loose clothing or a tie β it can get caught in pulleys.
Closing the Bonnet
- Remove and re-seat the prop rod in its bracket holder before closing.
- Lower the bonnet gently until it is about 30 cm above the closed position.
- Let the bonnet drop freely under its own weight β do not slam it.
- Press down firmly on both sides to confirm the latch has engaged.
- Give the bonnet a slight upward tug to confirm it is locked shut before the customer drives away.
Key Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Prop rod | A metal rod inside the bonnet area used to hold the bonnet open safely. |
| Coolant | A liquid mixture (water + antifreeze) that regulates engine temperature. |
| Dipstick | A metal rod inserted into the oil sump used to measure the engine oil level. |
| Secondary latch | The second safety catch under the front of the bonnet that prevents accidental opening while driving. |
