In this lesson: You will discover the skills you already have — even if you have never had a payslip — and write them down so you can use them everywhere.
Many first-time job seekers say “I have no experience”. Almost always, that is not true. You have experience — it just did not come with a payslip.
Employers hiring for entry-level jobs are mostly looking for people who are reliable, honest, willing to learn and good with people. You can prove these things from everyday life:
-
Looking after younger brothers and sisters shows responsibility and patience
-
Helping at a family spaza shop or selling sweets at school shows handling money and serving customers
-
Playing in a team or singing in a church choir shows teamwork and turning up on time
-
Doing chores for neighbours, braiding hair or washing cars shows you can find work and deliver it
-
Volunteering at a clinic, school or community event shows you care and can follow instructions
These are called transferable skills — skills you can take from one place and use in another. A cashier needs to count money correctly and stay friendly with a long queue. If you have sold airtime or run a tuck shop, you have done that.
Make your skills list
Take a page and write three headings: People skills, Practical skills and Computer and phone skills. Under each, list everything you can do, with one example of when you did it. For example: “Handling money — counted the takings at my aunt’s tuck shop every Friday for two years.”
You will use this list in every chapter of this course: on your CV, in your cover letters, and in your interview answers.
Instructor tip: Ask a friend or family member what they think you are good at. Other people often notice strengths we take for granted.
